Executive Director of FPA, Victoria Bucataru: Media Literacy and The Challenge of Fake News

767

Moldova, a country with a Soviet past and hopes of a European future, has by no means avoided the problem of fake news and disinformation. Given its geopolitical position, in the past few years Moldova has been a target of hostile activity, short of conventional military measures, after domestic and foreign policy developments had redirected Russian attention to the country. The protracted transition to market economy and the legacy of a tightly controlled society during communism have so far hindered in-depth, society-wide discussions about democracy and its fundamental tenets, such as freedom of speech and freedom of media.
